Although it’s an improvement over the execrable “Exorcist 2,” this second sequel isn’t anything to write home about. Novelist William Peter Blatty made the transition to director here, and his inexperience shows: It’s easy to see what he was going for, but the shots and transitions are often so pedestrian that it’s hard to believe this was a big-budget release. In the lead, George C. Scott’s performance is laughable and his character entirely unlikable, and the majority of the film seems to consist of long-winded speeches about things that sound interesting but that we never see, making the movie a drag to sit through.
