I hate to say it but I was disappointed by Lorde’s follow-up to 2013’s “Pure Heroine.” The then-seventeen-year-old New Zealander delivered an arresting debut album with the aforementioned work, which captures the thoughts of a precocious, preternaturally mature teenager with a clear focus. Here however, the transition from adolescence to womanhood is the theme, and the singer’s passion seems to be missing. Sure, some of the lyrics are terrific and her vocals are strong (actually quite exciting in some points), but the songs meander from one unformed melody to another, and strangely each song seems to be the finale, fading out slowly and taking any momentum with them. It’s not a bad album, but it’s nevertheless a disappointing one, although it’s not enough of a letdown for me to give up on the young artist. I was just hoping for something different.
