David Bowie – Blackstar (2016)

There probably has never been an album quite like this one. Recorded while the legendary performing was dying of cancer, David Bowie’s “Blackstar,” which was released only a few days before his passing, is like a final love letter to his longtime fans. With haunting songs like “Lazarus” (which must rank among some of his career-best work) and “Dollar Days,” Bowie invites his listeners into his woozy mind, abstractly reflecting on a career filled with musical ups and downs in his own inimitable manner, up to and including the songs’ arrangements as well as his own signature voice. Even for non fans, this is a remarkable accomplishment, one that will forever be remembered and discussed within the context of his passing, and that indicates that Bowie knew exactly what he was doing with his career, right up until the last moment. Literally.
