Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return – At the Earth’s Core (2017)

The final episode of Netflix’s reboot of the cult television show is about on par with the ones that have come before. The movie featured is, of course, terrible – this time, it’s 1976’s cheapie “At the Earth’s Core,” an absolutely dreadful science-fiction yarn with hilariously forced machismo from lead Doug McClure and an irritating Peter Cushing. It can sometimes be difficult to focus on the gang’s jokes because the movie is really such a minute-by-minute disaster that it naturally draws the viewer’s attention, like a car crash. It’s hard to know what to make of the gang’s wrap-around storyline (namely, Kinga’s nuptial plans with Jonah), but the rest leading up to it is a lot of fun, in particular the early scenes from “Core,” which are staggeringly cheap and take some time to process.

Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)
