I somehow managed to get to my mid-thirties before finally watching this beloved cult classic, and despite not having grown up with it I found it absolutely mesmerizing and charming. The animation is dated and seems a little economical, but it gives the film a distinctive look, one somewhere between Disney’s “The Black Cauldron” and a 1970s anime. The voice work (in particular by Angela Lansbury) is so committed and effective, but the real star of the show here is the music sung by America, which stamps the film with such a distinct identity and beauty that one can’t help but be swept along.
