The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

Recalling the heights of “The Breakfast Club,” not to mention more modern teen classics like “Easy A” and “Whip It,” Kelly Fremon Craig’s directorial debut is a potential cult classic waiting to happen, in parts thanks to Hailee Steinfeld’s pitch-perfect performance. With a great script that captures the often self-imposed alienation of adolescence with sympathy and compassion, the movie follows Steinfeld’s teen cynic as she learns how to grow up and be accountable for her own decisions. With Hayden Szeto as an absolutely charming potential romantic interest, and great support from veterans Woody Harrelson and Kyra Sedgwick, “The Edge of Seventeen” glides along effortlessly, managing to balance laugh-out-loud comedy with understated drama and emerging as a significant gem and announces the arrival of a major talent in Craig.
