Fans of Paul Verhoeven’s high profile fiasco “Showgirls,” originally released in 1995, were delighted by MGM’s ten-year anniversary box set celebrating the film as the legendarily campy unintentional comedy it most definitely is, and part of its pleasures was the commentary track by self-described “professional Showgirls aficionado” David Schmader. A writer based in Seattle, Schmader’s annotated screenings of the movie, peppered with an endearing, hilarious mix of outright, unabashed love for the movie and the many contradictions it represents as well as surprisingly fascinating knowledge of all things Showgirls, led to this commentary track – and redefines the experience of watching the movie itself. Highly recommended for fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000, Rifftrax, or really any fan of bad movies or famous cinema fiascos who share an interest in fan-propelled commentary.
