20th Century Women (2016)

“20th Century Women” is the type of movie that has become regrettably rare since the 1990s: A thoughtful, deliberately paced, and intelligent coming-of-age story without any cliches or forced drama, focusing on the path to adulthood for a male teenager surrounded by strong women, and what it means to be a good man. The cast is uniformly excellent, in particular Annette Bening who brings her trademark class and magnitude, and Greta Gerwig, who displays tremendous versatility here, veering from her usual quirks to dramatic heights and back again without missing a beat.
