Sia – This Is Acting (2016)

The perpetually unpredictable and chronically headstrong Australian pop star’s seventh studio album is just as strong as her previous smash breakthrough, 2014’s “1000 Forms of Fear,” and while “This Is Acting” is made up of songs written by Sia for other artists, you’d never be able to tell. Her signature, thrillingly uncontrolled vocal delivery is in full force here, particularly on “Bird Set Free,” “Alive” and “Move Your Body,” and the themes of independence and overcoming adversity unfailingly register as sincere and focused instead of treacly and cliche, which is itself an accomplishment.
